Inscription

« Back to Glossary Index

Data linked (or “inscribed”) to a particular satoshi, as specified by Ordinal theory. The data can be text, video, audio, or even functional code. The data is permanently and unalterably stored in the Bitcoin blockchain.

For example, some people use a copy of an image Inscription they own as their social media profile picture. The original JPEG, GIF, or other image file is stored in the data field of a Bitcoin transaction, which also points to a specific satoshi held in their Bitcoin wallet.

It’s common for Inscriptions to also be referred to as “Ordinals.” Both terms are somewhat equivalent to “NFT,” as seen in other chains, although Ordinals are unique to Bitcoin and differ significantly from NFTs.
